Interview With MrSunnyZ

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

In 1992, City of Xiamen, China needed to upgrade its phone # from 6 digits to 7 digits, by adding “0” after the 1st digit. To promote the event, the city’s Post and Telecom Bureau held a city-wide logo design competition.

This was the winning logo and was used for the promotion. I designed the logo by incorporating “6” and “7” into a phone handset (with cord) to signify the transition, also seen is “0” being inserted after 1st digit.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

No software, no computer available at the time of design, it is drawn and painted by hand.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

From conception to completion, it was all on paper. This was done before the computer came into my design career. I had to use pencil, pen, watercolor and paper and deliver the design physically. Sounds funny doesn’t it? But that was where the logo designer came from.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

Both colors were from the logo of then China Post and Telecom, of which the city’s Post and Telecom Bureau was a branch.

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

I spent about 2 weeks on this from conception to completion. A minor revision was needed after the logo was chosen by the client.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

It was tough to come up with an idea that conveyed the clear message about the phone number upgrade, i.e. from 6 digits to 7 digits, by adding a “0” after the 1st digit, while still keeping the mark simple, easy to understand and easy to remember.

Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?

I was perfect to me, plus it was an event logo so of course no need to make any change.
