Rhythm Magical

Interview With Josh Hayes

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

Logo for a Danish Music Studio specialising in production of Electronica scores & soundscapes. The idea is based around the catchphrase “This is were the magic happens” & the rabbit out of the hat represents the finished musical composition coming to life.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

The one & only Adobe Illustrator.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

Lots of sketching & re-sketching, the hat element was locked in pretty quickly. The bunny changed extensively, (See sketch below)

Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?

Sentinel Medium for the headline, I choose it because the ball terminals of the typeface matches the music note element in the mark. Gotham Medium Rounded for the tagline. Both typefaces from Hoefler & Frere-Jones.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

Purple & Gold were client choices, which made sense as they have always been used to portray mystique, prestige, etc. The grey (used as a shadow in the white background version, see sketch) worked perfect as the magic bunny.

Q:Do you have any sketches of the logo in the early stages?

Top left we have the final development sketch of the bunny, to the right we see the early draft of the concept, shadow/highlight/lightsource awaiting to be corrected. On the bottom we have the White Background version of the final mark.

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

There was a lot of research & development for this project. From start to finish – about 3 weeks.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

Biggest challenge would’ve been sorting out the light source, this isn’t something I would normally incorporate into a logo, so I was fairly new at it in this context. More specifically, deciding how much/little toning would work & not overpower the message of the mark.

Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?

No, couldn’t be happier with the final result.
