Interview With Jeff Hughes
Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?
I had been playing around with the idea of a nib logo for some time. It seems to be a popular theme and I had yet to try one. The idea of using a spearhead seemed my best option given the possibilities I had on the table.
Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.
Adobe Illustrator CS5.
Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?
The design process took place entirely in Illustrator. I knew from the beginning that the title would be “TRIBAL”. I began with a rough outline of the spearhead and shaft to get an idea of the proportions I wanted. Then I concentrated mainly on the wooden portion of the design to determine an appropriate level of detail. Next I added the leather binding and feathers. After that, I began adding detail to the spearhead and finally I set the font.
Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?
12 Avenir 95 Black.
Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?
In my mind I haven’t and don’t think I ever will. This logo seems to work so well with all sorts of color schemes. I chose a monochrome and decided to let the viewer’s imagination do the coloring.
Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?
Approximately 20 hours. Much of this time was spent thinking and tweaking.
Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?
Color scheme. Ironically, I chose a monochrome in the end but retain several colored variations.
Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?
I don’t think so. It seems to work for me.
