Interview With Robert Baumgartner

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

The logo was designed for a web agency with the name “dancer”. The main problem was coming up with a design that made sense with that name, but didn’t look like if it was for a dance school. Browsing Google for inspiration I came across the image of a peacock which I then settled for. The client loved it! (Turns out, peacocks are one of his favorite animals)

Actually, the version seen here is not the version finally chosen, but the one I love the most. The client chose a slightly simpler version (less feathers on the tail)

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

I always draw my sketches in Fireworks and then go to Illustrator to finalize it.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

I have a little book where I just draw random stuff – from little sketches to actual drawings. When I start on a new project, I always make some sketches in that book until I think I have found a nice idea. Then I’ll switch to the computer and continue from there.

Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?

Currently Houschka, but it’s not clear if it will stay like this. If I or the client (who is also a designer) find a better font it might get replaced.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

It’s a peacock, how should I decide? – Kidding aside, I decided for a colorful logo, because I think it goes better with the name “dancer.”

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

All in all it was a process that took about two months Of course not full time, but I made a lot of revisions.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

As said above, the name of the clients company is “dancer” in german. It was hard to come up with something that fit the name but didn’t look like a dance school.

Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?

Uhm no, not really. I would change the version the client chose to this one, but I like both! – This one is just my personal favorite, I guess everyone has a different taste and that’s fine :)
