Interview With Ian Paget
Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?
Suga Rush is a start-up business who will be selling candy inspired cocktails. The logo features a custom illustrated typeface, which uses loops to reference sweets and lollypops! The cocktail glass with lollypop at the end ensures onlookers know what to expect. The overall style also feels like a nightclub, helping to give the connection to alcoholic drinks.
Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.
Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?
I start my process by asking questions, then creating a list of goals. I the sketched a number of ideas on paper, where I first started to explore the idea of a custom ‘curvy’ typeface design. I then moved into illustrator, where I was able to illustrate each letter using bezier curves before creating outlined to perfect each letter.
Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?
A custom typeface.
Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?
The gradient from pink to yellow feels like candy. Having a strong relationship to sweets was essential.
Q:Do you have any sketches of the logo in the early stages?
This page shows early development of the design. As you will notice, a number of the ideas explored here were featured in the final logo, including the curved type on the far right, as well as the supporting icon.
Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?
In total from start to finish the logo project was over a 2 week period, however around 2-3 days total design time for the whole project.
Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?
Illustrating the type was a challenge, making sure that each work together, and remain readable. Some letters required a few variations to be designed to ensure the best possible final results.
Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?
I’m really happy with the final design. In use I have noticed the client has added a slogan ‘The Candy Bar’ so ideally I would like to have included this within the logo design itself.
