Interview With Veerle Pieters

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

I wanted to play with the shape of characters.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

My software of choice is Adobe Illustrator and I did use it for this logo as well.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

I almost always start by sketching on paper. The other thing I do is analyzing: analyzing the letters in the name and their shape, looking for ways to do something creative with them. The fact that the name of the logo is very compact is of course a plus. My attention went to the ‘s’ the ‘o’ and the double ‘l’ at the end.

These were my 4 steps to the final design:

  1. my initial design with the ‘o’ touching the double ‘l’ and the ‘r’ connected to the ‘o’
  2. reshaping ‘c’
  3. moving the ‘s’ on top of the ‘c’
  4. connecting the ‘c’ to the ‘o’

Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?

I didn’t use a font for this as every letter is custom made.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

I didn’t since it is black and white logo.

Q:Do you have any sketches of the logo in the early stages?

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

Don’t remember exactly but I think it is somewhere beween 10 and 14 hours.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

The biggest was to make sure it has enough visual impact since it is served as a magazine logo.

Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?

No I’m proud and content with it.
