Interview With Sam Wilson
Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?
The inspiration for the logo came from retro lettering from the 70s and 80s. The idea was to hint at gemstones without being too obvious. The company’s name is based on Ruby (the programming language) but they didn’t want to overemphasize this.
Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.
Illustrator, Flash, and Photoshop were each used.
Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?
I started with a lot of sketching in my Moleskine. Went through lots of variations, but liked the simplest approaches most.
Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?
None, everything was based on rectangles.
Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?
I chose a scheme that reinforced the gemstone concept.
Q:Do you have any sketches of the logo in the early stages?
Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?
About a week of brief and intermittent work.
Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?
How to subtly relate the company to rubies without making it seem like they made rubies.
Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?
You may ask me that in a few months ;)
