Interview With Justin Saegusa
Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?
The idea was sparked from the variety of holiday cards I received this season. I wanted to create a simple, iconic mark whose message was not limited to a particular season, and that would appeal to everyone, regardless of their chosen faith (or lack thereof).
Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.
Adobe Illustrator.
Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?
I did start with a quick sketch—initially just integrating the peace sign gesture with a heart. Once I started to flesh the design out on the computer, though, I realized that the ampersand form could be comfortably incorporated into the design, enhancing its legibility (as a phrase) and overall unity (as a mark).
Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?
i didn’t feel that it was necessary to include text (other than the ampersand glyph), as the mark clearly speaks for itself.
Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?
That one’s pretty obvious….and although I usually try to stray away from cliche color schemes, I feel that this design demanded a simple, instantly-associative one-color solution to maintain the mark’s relationship to its concept, as well as its appeal to a wide-ranging audience.
Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?
A couple of hours.
Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?
Harmoniously combining the three forms while at the same time maintaining their individual integrity and legibility.
