NvohkFeatured Logo

Interview With Andrew Sabatier

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

Nvohk was an experiment in crowdsourcing and crowdfunding, paid members could make decisions on the running of a surf and skate inspired eco clothing company. The central placement of the o of Nvhok lent itself to a strong focal point which could double up typographically as a reversed out o and conceptually as the earth, without any obvious cliche. The sorrounding letters provided the flourishes to encircle and complete the o, and conceptually to suggest waves and care of the earth.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

No drawing package could hope to realistically compete with Illustrator. A moot point really.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

Paper sketches for the basic idea and then onto the computer to refine the letterforms.

Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?

The typeface is entirely proprietary. I constructed each letter to ensure the overall mark best suited the idea.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

The color scheme varies and the flourishes surround the earth in the primary version. Other versions surround other eco related ideas and the colours are chosen to suite the featured idea.

Q:Do you have any sketches of the logo in the early stages?

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

About a day.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

The positive and negative relationship between the letterforms was challenging. Getting the negative o to read at the same optical weight as the other postive letterforms was tricky.

Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?

Nope. It’s a strong contemporary brandmark with a timeless quality.
