Interview With Sam Williams

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

The obvious use of the letter M was combined with a desire to produce a 2D but layered, almost paper-like motif. The initial design was a sharper version of the final M without the texture or patina. The patina was added during the final design stages in an attempt to strike a balance between a flat, 2D motif and a lush 3D motif.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

Adobe Photoshop CS3 for concept and Adobe Illustrator CS3 for the final production.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

Creative process produced over 30 designs drawing inspiration from the wireless industry. All designs were created in Ai and Ps. Extensive staff surveying was used to pinpoint final selection. The typeface, and in particular the custom cut-aways, were inspired by the previous company logo (credit goes to brandhaus.com.au).

Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?

BlairMdITC TT Medium.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

A simple variations on classic colours was produced, ranging from dark greys to rich yellows. Previous company colours included a lot of darker navy blues, thus blue was eventually retained albeit with a strong injection of cyan to add brightness.

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

2 weeks on and off.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

The fact that the new logo was for a company merger, thus two theoretically similar, yet fundamentally different entities had to be represented.
