Interview With Denis Wong

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

Matizmo specializes in providing design and marketing for technology companies. But the brief was crafted in such a way that the logo should have little reference to what the company does. The idea was to create something different and unique to what design and marketing company logo usually resembles. The star idea came up while trying to nail down a direction. Why star? The next big thing, famous, bright/intelligent and more importantly unique. The end result was by using the star edges in an angle, an M appears.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

My software of choice will have to be Adobe InDesign. I know Indesign is more for publication and layout design. All the tools required to create a logo is in there. I don’t really need fancy 3D effects or any other. But if there’s a need, then my next choice will be Illustrator.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

First thing first… ask the client to fill the blank with a project brief. Once I get back the brief, I’ll break it apart and start looking for ideas in my head and start directly to draw on my computer. I don’t really like to sketch as I feel kind of restricted. Let me explain… when I draw on the screen, I try to replicate what’s in my head and while doing so, I sometimes get it right and sometimes it’s totally wrong. The best thing about it is that when it’s wrong, it can be something unique and brilliant. I called this accidental design.

Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?

Handel Gothic with custom cuts here and there.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

Well, orange was a color that will certainly catch attention. The brief suggested vibrant and young color. Orange kind of fits the bill.

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

I had total creative freedom on this. The biggest challenge was myself I think.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

I had total creative freedom on this. The biggest challenge was myself I think.

Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?

Not a thing!
