Lilly Maritime

Lilly Maritime

Interview With Hector Janse van Rensburg

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

After playing on my sketchpad, I started to draw a boat when I could see that the main framework of the boat shape could be made up from the letters of ‘Lilly’. I developed this idea until I came up with the finished product as you see.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

Adobe Photoshop CS2, but I always keep my work in paths so that it can be kept scalable.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

I started out on my sketchbook, and at a lack of ideas started drawing a boat from which the idea was born.

Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?

The ‘Lilly’ font was custom made for this purpose due to its’ nature.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

I decided to use red and grey to create the contrast between the two elements of the logo as you can see. It’s quite an industrial company, that wanted to be in the spotlight, so this seemed fitting.

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

The logo from start to completion to about 2 hours, mostly fiddling around trying to get the type to fit.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

The hardest part was the maintain the balance between keeping the ‘Lilly’ type readable whilst making the shape of the boat.
