Featured LogoInterview With Matt Gavenda
Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?
The idea came from the most basic of ideas behind a pizza shop. The pizza. I wanted to make it friendly enough to be a family pizza shop. Classy enough to be respected. Yet colorful and lively.
Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.
Illustrator is usually my software of choice for designing logos. I used AI CS2 for this design after I had it sketched out.
Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?
I did start with pen and paper. I had a bunch of ideas laid out. I did this logo for my family’s pizzeria. So I threw ideas by them to get an idea of what they liked. To get a feel as to whether or not they liked the direction I was heading with it. Then moved over to Illustrator to execute it.
Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?
Adobe Garamond Semi Bold and Adobe Garamond Semi Bold Italic.
Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?
I worked out a number of color options but found the red and blue played off each other well. The deeper red and the lighter colors I thought gave it it’s own identity. When researching the main pizza chains it did seem that red does have a way of saying pizza.
Q:Do you have any sketches of the logo in the early stages?
I think it says pizza in a very unique way. Yet it’s very familiar.

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?
I was able to get it done in about 3 and a half weeks. I had started before hand with sketches and was able to get it done in my spare time.
Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?
Isolating the exact meaning that I wanted to get across. There are thousands if not tens of thousands or more pizza logos out there. I just wanted something that was unique and special for my family’s pizza shop.
Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?
I would have liked to have a little more time picking or making a unique font just for the logo.
