Interview With Billy Devine

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

The client wanted a brand that was retro and cool but also clean and to the point. I wanted to have a character/figure with headphones somewhere in the logo to give that instant message – enjoyment of music. I try and make the typography do more than just spell out the name.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

Illustrator – vector is the ONLY path for logos (no pun intended).

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

I started with some sketches on paper, but quickly moved onto computer as it’s quite a geometric logo.

Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?

Impact for the ‘Records’ part. The rest I made up.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

I decided on the color scheme after my first meeting with the client – he had a t-shirt with the exact same colors so I guessed that he’d like them. Saying that, the logo was designed to be strong enough to be used in a range of color schemes, which is what I ultimately provided to the client.

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

After approval of the initial concept, probably a couple of days.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

Like all logo designs, the challenge of a logo is always to ‘give the message’ of what that particular company/organisation/individual is all about. Their ‘character’. What services do they provide? What are they selling? Where do they sit in the market?

Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?

There are always tweaks and changes that you wish you’d done before releasing the logo into the world. On the whole though, I’m quite happy with it – more importantly, the client likes it.
