Interview With Gavin Billings

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

I was playing around with self branding using just my name, then just my initials, while trying to avoid using a typeface.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

Adobe Illustrator CS4.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

I began with a sketchpad and pencil, eventually inking several designs on paper, which I then recreated in vector, and refined the shape itself several more times digitally.

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

I’m partial to the offset complimentary feel, and here I chose the orange/blue because I felt they had a good juxtaposition of hot/cold, or opposing moods without slapping you in the face with pure red versus pure blue. Although I selected these two specifically as my main colors I have played with scrolling the hue of the image as a whole and find that it doesn’t really take away from the flavor of the logo at all, as long as the colors are adjusted in equal amounts.

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

Probably about 6 hours from sketch to final. I did a lot of tweaking, especially with flow between the curves and straight lines.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

Making the digital version as smooth as the one in my head. I couldn’t use anything as convenient as snapping to position things how I wanted and I’m terrible at mathematics, so getting the proportions and angles was mostly trial and error. I also learned a lot more about using Illustrator during the process.

Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?

The width of the white space between segments is not exactly the same as the white space in the other areas of the logo. There’s not a huge difference but its noticeable and the logo might be improved by changing that.
