Interview With Karl Baxter
Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?
The logo will be pre-dominantly be used with collateral to market to people looking to come to Australia for working holidays etc. So the logo needed to be fun and friendly while highlighting Oz as the destination and place where this activity would occur. Simple text coupled with a soft map of Australia seemed natural.
Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.
Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?
Created a few different concepts on paper and narrowed it down to one. I wrote the word fundraising around 50 times until I had the parts to work with. I then sketched the Australia pic. These were scanned and made into vectors in Illustrator and then pushed and pulled a bit. I had downunder in many different fonts and chose the one I thought was best and then put it together to get the balance right.
Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?
Segoe UI and custom font.
Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?
It came naturally, there were a few possibilites but this fitted really well immediately. There is a variation with a black background with white text that also works really well, business cards will use this variation.
Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?
The logo was done in bibs and bobs over the holiday period but probably around a day including communication with the client.
Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?
It was important to avoid having something that was too Aussie so to speak, and to avoid the downunder idea of desert and crocodiles etc.
Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?
Not at this stage, maybe in a few weeks there will be.
