Interview With Maxime Savage

Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?

The client’s Chinese name (Fay-yi, “Jade”) sounds like Fairy, so she has been using this image in the past. She wanted a clean and fresh logo while using the fairy… Not wanting to fall into the cliche imagery or fairytales I thought the best way would be to just make it as abstract and clear as possible.

Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.

Adobe photoshop and Illustrator cs4.

Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?

I always start my designs with a pen. It took a few attempts to get the right shape (keep the fairy visible, but also have the “natural” factor as obvious as possible). I started with wings made of vines and branches but it became apparent that the leaves were the way to go.

Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?

Trajan Pro

Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?

My client requested a Jade / Pale Yellow / brown logo as she was already using them in the past.

Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?

2 weeks.

Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?

The hardest part was to keep all the elements (the fairy, the leaves, the F) visible while retaining something visually pleasing and as simple as possible.

Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?

I’m quite satisfied with it. Maybe with more time I would have perfectionist the shape of the wings / leaves, but it still looks fine.
