Interview With John Harfield
Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?
After 7 years in finance, Edel Porter decided she had had enough. She followed her dream and opened up her own cafe in Edinburgh. All she had was the name she loved: “Copper Bird Cafe”.
She came to me needing a brand identity, stationary, signage, uniforms, menus…pretty much everything.
I combined 3 of the business’s 3 ingredients to make the identity; coffee beans, cappuccino steam and a bird.
Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.
Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?
Lots and lots of sketches until the client picked one. Then developed it on my trusty Mac until we were both happy.
Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?
Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?
Being called Copper Bird Cafe, the only choice was getting the right shade of copper, which ended up being #573635.
Q:Do you have any sketches of the logo in the early stages?
It’s not a sketch, but it shows the meaning behind the logo.
Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?
About 2 weeks all in all.
Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?
Probably making the cappuccino steam look like feathers. I have a good relationship with the client so this was a very enjoyable project. I even get free coffee now!
Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?
Nope, the brand seems to suit the cafe well and the client is happy!
