Interview With Leighton Hubbell
Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?
The client wanted something unusual and easily identified with camping and campgrounds. With that in mind, I tried to simulate the carved wood signage that you often see when entering a campground or park. I played with several other layouts of the sign, but of this concept, this one was the overall favorite.
Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.
Adobe Illustrator CS3.
Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?
Usually when I work on logo concepts, I have paper or my sketch book handy to work out ideas. If they are especially illustrative, I do some tighter sketches to work out the details completely before scanning. From there, they are retraced in Illustrator to a completed vector file.
Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?
Vendetta Bold. I wanted a typeface that had a hand carved quality to the letterforms. Something that would be cut out with a router.
Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?
I wanted something inviting and colorful, but muted enough to look like it would be used on an outdoor recreational sign. The warm tones in the wood were also important.
Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?
Approximately 3 days from conception to completion.
Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?
Developing the logo to have a dimensional quality to it and communicate as a familiar sign. Also, getting the wood grain and weathering to look right without appearing overdone.
Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?
Not at the moment. It’s still a favorite at the moment.
