Interview With Kevin Donnigan
Q:Where did the idea for this logo come from?
I, as well as a lot of other designers I assume, have a hard time coming up with designs for myself. I would spend days sketching, mocking-up, and not completing anything because I would always change my mind. I didn’t know what I wanted. I took a month long break and revisited the project. I wanted something simple, meaningful, and memorable.
I accidentally produced something that looked like a pencil, then it just went on from there. Finally, I have something I love for myself.
Q:What application did you use to design this logo? E.g., Illustrator.
Adobe Illustrator, the best!
Q:What was your design process for this logo? I.e., Did you start out with pen and paper then move to the computer?
As with all of my logo designs, I started from paper. However, I was messing around with a similar sketch on the computer when I ended up with the finished logo.
I always start with a pencil and pad, sketch ideas out, and mock-up concepts on the computer after choosing a handful of the best looking sketches.
Q:What font(s) were used in the logo?
Avian. I love sans-serif fonts that are thin, clean, and pleasing to the eye.
Q:How did you choose the color scheme for the logo?
They appealed to me. Black, dark grey (60% black), and orange are my colors of choice for my business.
Q:How long did it take to complete the logo?
All together with my constant indecisive nit-picking… about 2 months (including a break here and there).
Q:What do you feel was your biggest challenge in designing the logo?
It was for myself. I didn’t completely know what I wanted since a logo has a very heavy impact on your business. I drove myself crazy, but it was worth it!
Q:Now that the logo is finished, is there anything you would change about it?
Nothing. It is what it is and I am completely satisfied with it.
