New Logo Concept for the Spartans?

Michigan State Spartans Original Logo (left) and New Logo (right)

There’s big logo news coming out of Big Ten country and Michigan State Spartan fans are not happy about it. Last month, the Board of Trustees at Michigan State University filed for a trademark application for the redesigned mark of Michigan State Spartans athletic teams. I have to say, I agree with the fans.

The new mark isn’t that much different from the original one, so I’m wondering first why it took two years to arrive at this design and why not just stick with tradition and keep the original mark?

What About a Combination of Both?

New Combo Version of the Spartan MarkIf a change is going to be made, I think a combination of both marks might be the better option. There are certain aspects of both marks that could be improved but also parts of each that I feel could be left alone. The eye hole of the original helmet seems too pointy, maybe it’s just me? As for the new mark, the green plume on top is definitely a deal breaker. However, it’s possible that this is just a bad version of the new mark as I believe it was taken from the Patent Office website. Assuming that the plume on the new mark is in fact how it’s meant to look, it’s not good; definitely one aspect of the original that could be left alone. The solid green area between the plume and helmet is another area that could have been left as is. On the original mark, this area added something extra to the design and I think it’s too plain on the new mark. I think the original helmet was fine (though I don’t care for the eye hole), but I do like the new helmet better; It doesn’t seem as friendly as the original.

You can see my version of the new mark above. I’ve taken what I felt were the best aspects of both marks and combined them, along with touching up the helmet in a couple places. What do you think?

Yeah, I like your version better, but I don’t like how the cheek protector looks so big and bulky. Maybe the bottom of the helmet could be something in between, too. Great post.

I agree. The cheek protector does seem a bit large.

After working in a sports marketing firm for years dealing with collegiate athletic programs, messing with any collegiate identity seems to turn into disasters in most cases.

They are tough jobs though which is probably why it took so long doing all of the research, initial concepts and dealing with a “design by committee”. It’s tough to keep fans, alumni, and boosters happy. They all seem to have a say.

Yeah, design by committee always sucks. With this design it’s almost like they tried to keep it close to the original and not go too overboard with the change. I just feel like if they wanted a change, they should have made a CHANGE. Not kept something that looks almost like (but not as good) as the original. Might as well keep the original one.

It’s almost as if they were trying to simplify it and make it more solid. I’d say probably for their benefit of production purposes on apparel. I’m not a fan at all of the new plume on top.

Yeah I really don’t know what they were going for with the new plume. Just looks odd.

Its pretty clearly inspired by the Spartan helmets in the movie 300
